In the recent editorial by Ruffin,I believe the author is mistaken in his assumption that "no studies have evaluated the newer cervical smear instruments using a clinically relevant end point...." In fact, many excellent studies2-8 have been published that considered detection of cervical abnormalities as an outcome measure. These studies2-7 have demonstrated that cervical cancer screening varies not only with the instrument used but also with the technique for which the instrument is used.8
