I read the article by Yawn et al,1 published in the September 1992 issue of the ARCHIVES, and have several questions regarding the study of pregnant women. Were the women informed about the study before participating? Did the women consent to participate? Could the women opt out? I question the propriety of using women in medical research studies without notice and consent.2-4 This population is especially vulnerable when presenting to institutions during parturition.5,6 Moreover, the study's method of circumventing Minnesota's positive toxicology reporting law seems a clever but dishonest stratagem to avoid being truthful to patients and to avoid the state's law. Despite approval of the procedure, I question the legitimacy of what appears to be an investigative study using human subjects without their knowledge or consent. I distinguish our species from laboratory animals and hope family physicians think twice before using patients in research projects that
