DEAR BEN: You and I had been friends for years. Although you are an attorney and I a physician, our relationship had been personal, not professional. I was interested, therefore, when an opportunity arose to watch you work. More than 1 year ago, you were one of a team of lawyers representing the plaintiff in a medical malpractice lawsuit. The plaintiff was a man whose wife died within hours of being admitted to the hospital. He alleged that care by the admitting physician had been negligent.

I decided to watch the trial for all of its 40 hours. I felt the pain of the treating physicians as they testified. I heard the jury announce its verdict in favor of the plaintiff. The experience confirmed for me that although you and I live in the same city, we live in different worlds.
