The more than 800 pages of the Handbook of Medical Toxicology, divided among 82 chapters by 77 contributing authors, comprise a comprehensive yet concisely written desk reference directed toward students, residents, physicians, and other clinicians interested in the care of poisoned patients.
The first two of its eight major sections present introductory chapters on epidemiological factors, prevention, basic pharmacokinetics, and the general approach to the poisoned patient. Chapter 4, discussing initial evaluation and management, is especially well written, and chapter 7, on the capabilities of laboratory testing, is quite informative.
Chapters in the subsequent sections are monographs presented in an accessible, standardized outline format. These sections include "Industrial and Household Toxicology," "Medical Toxicology," "Drugs of Abuse," "Environmental Toxins," and "Animal and Plant Toxicology." An appendix provides brief discussions of the differential diagnoses for common clinical findings in poisoned patients.
