In the last 10 years there has been a rapid proliferation of textbooks dedicated to the broad category of exercise and sports medicine. These texts have included everything from the clinical management of injured and ill patients to sports performance. In the preface of this book, the two editors state that their focus is not on the common paths but rather on three specific areas of prevention. The first is on disease prevention, which they call primary prevention. The second is on the use of exercise to inhibit or delay medical problems, which they call secondary prevention. The third area is on the improvement of the functional capacity of patients with disease, or tertiary prevention. This book serves the purpose of being a clinical guide for those who prescribe exercise to patients. It is designed to be used in two ways: as an informative review and as a reference guide . . .
