Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology was written as a focus on female patients from neonatal life to age 21 years—an area of medicine that the editors refer to as "subspecialized" gynecology. The specific objective stated by the editors is to provide a compact compilation of current literature appropriate to the many medical and surgical problems encountered by clinicians who provide care for pediatric and adolescent gynecologic patients.
As a family physician whose patient population is made up predominantly of women and children, I was eagerly looking forward to an update on evaluation and treatment of problems that are actually most often seen first in the offices of family physicians and primary care pediatricians. Unfortunately, what I discovered was a text that appears to be written by, and seemingly for, subspecialist physicians who do not provide first-contact care to patients with common problems.
