WHAT HAS FAMILY MEDICINE been, and what will it become in the future? In many ways, my projection of what our future will be is, in essence, a direct reflection of how I perceive our recent past.
BACKGROUND: FAMILY PRACTICE
Family physicians are the first professional contact for medical problems. Family medicine emphasizes urgent, preventive, and continuous care of office-based problems. The care is provided in the context of family, occupation, and community issues. Family medicine is comprehensive: family physicians request consultation for about 5% of visits. We advocate for patients as they traverse the medical care system.
ADVANCES AFFECTING FAMILY PRACTICE
