The following is from an interview with a patient in our practice who stopped smoking in January 1996: "I am 31 years old and have smoked for just over 7 years. My wife and I tried to stop smoking 1 year ago and were successful together for 6 months. I had a cigarette I day under stress and started smoking again. One week later, I was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day and my wife started smoking again, too.
Several years ago, my clinic started having the physician's assistant asking regularly on my visits if I smoked while putting me in the examination room. My physician would offer me help each time and gave me literature that helped me get ready to quit. My wife and I made up our minds to quit together, and I went in to see my physician.
