We appreciate Dr Carmichael's kind letter and concur that accounting for "personal requests in health care" is an integral part of primary care. The notion of discussing patient rights is an underappreciated part of health maintenance. Posting these rights is a useful start in stimulating discussion between patients and their physicians about the concepts of benefit and autonomy. A proactive approach for initiating an engaged dialogue on mutual expectations can thereby help avoid future conflicts over inappropriate patient demands for medical therapy.
