Abstract

The theme of this article is that a faculty chief negotiator in a unionized college should not continue to act as the president of a faculty senate. While the faculty senate president is normally an open, highly-principled individual, the successful chief negotiator should be close-mouthed, pragmatic, and willing to compromise. The paper also discusses the importance of internal bargaining in the pursuit of an acceptable, compromise agreement without unnecessary labor-management conflict.
