Abstract
Focusing on stigma as a sociocultural phenomenon, particularly in context of the modern hospital as bureaucratic as well as therapeutic institutions, the characteristics of sick role and stigmatization are considered. Patient depersonalization, illness "careers" and power-dependence relationships are noted. A number of forms of self-help, as in management of chronic illness, in coping with serious physical disability, in independent living, AIDS, and other serious conditions are examined, including hemodialysis and lupus. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License.
