In Memory of Professor Albert Roberts
It is with deep regret and profound admiration that we remember Professor Albert R. Roberts the founding editor of the Journal of Brief Treatments and Crisis Intervention who died in his home in June 2008. Professor Roberts was an academic of tremendous breadth who had a profound influence in the fields of social work, criminal justice, and mental health. In particular, however, he was a great champion of crisis intervention as representing a critical field of scholarship and practice. Al Roberts was a prolific scholar as the author of dozens of books and hundreds of journal articles. Through his editorial leadership in books and journals, Al Roberts fostered interactions and intellectual exchange among academics, policy makers, and practitioners across different fields of study—pushing each to consider the intersections between scholarship and practice in their work.Albert R. Roberts, PhD, BCETS, DACFE, was Professor of Criminal Justice (former Chairperson) and Director of Faculty and Curriculum Development, Administration of Justice and Interdisciplinary Criminal Justice Programs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Livingston College Campus at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in Piscataway. He was a tenured professor at Rutgers since 1989, prior to which he taught at Indiana University, Seton Hall University, Brooklyn College of City University of New York, and the University of New Haven. Professor Roberts had approximately 30 years full-time university teaching experience including 15 years of administrative experience (10 years as Chair and 5 years as a Program Director). He received an MA degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of Long Island University in 1967 and a DSW in 1978 (which became a PhD in 1981) from the School of Social Work and Community Planning at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Professor Roberts was a member of The Board of Scientific and Professional Advisors and a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress for The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. He was also a Diplomate of the American College of Forensic Examiners. Professor Roberts was a lifetime member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, had been a member of the National Association of Social Workers since 1974, and has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1992.
As a prolific and revered scholar, Professor Roberts influence will continue long into the future. His energy, enthusiasm, and excitement in all scholarly activities will be greatly missed.
