Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University The advent of DNA microarray technology is revolutionizing the way biomedical researchis conducted. Many disciplines have started to apply this high-throughputscreening of gene expression to improve their understanding of the molecular basis andto aid in more accurate classification, diagnosis, and/or prognosis of human diseases. We are doing pioneering work in using cDNA microarrays to generate highly informativegene expression profiles from pediatric patients undergoing renal transplantation.Specifically, we will be able to address important issues related to acute and chronic allograftrejection and/or dysfunction, as well as improve on current steroid-based immunosuppressivetherapy. This article will provide an overview of DNA microarray technologyand discuss how this powerful technique can be exploited in the field of renaltransplantation.
