I have read the article by Saultz1 in the February 1994 issue of the ARCHIVES. I have never considered rural health care to be an "index species" for the health of the entire system, but the concept is fascinating. I practiced in a rural area of northern California for more than 22 years. I recently left practice and would like to comment about the issues I see relating to the well-being of the rural health care system.
Our community has been fortunate in its ability to recruit physicians to replace those who were retiring. When I arrived in Mount Shasta, Calif, in 1972, I was the eighth physician in the service area. When I left, I was one of 17 full-time equivalent physicians in the area.
