My co-authors and I thank Dr Chen for his interest in our recent study and his interesting case report. Dr Chen's observation that personal inspection of urine and blood specimens by medical students and residents has become deemphasized raises concern that future physicians' skills in interpreting simple in-office microscopic specimens may become even more limited than they are now.
Dr Chen's interesting report wherein microcytic anemia was diagnosed from hematuria present on a urinalysis also may be an example of how we can increase efficiency in medicine. Why do two tests when you can do one? If Dr Chen's technique catches on, I wonder how long it will be before it is suggested that we have our patients deposit their sputum specimen into their urine samples so we can do three tests at once!
