Few issues in modern medicine cause more concern than the aging patient population and the imperative to contain the costs of caring for them. The first two editions of this textbook may have been ahead of their time, but this third one arrives when the topics of menopause and health maintenance in the aging woman have truly come to the fore.
The book is divided into four sections, each examining menopause from a different point of view. The first, "Aging and the Menopause," begins with a provocative look at the biology of aging by editor Bernard Eskin. Another chapter addresses psychiatric myths of the menopause, exploring midlife issues in their social, cultural, and psychological context. The inclusion of a chapter on pregnancy is an interesting sign of the times.
The second section, "Clinical Problems in the Menopause," calls on the expertise of contributors from the fields of gynecology, urology, cardiology
