I am grateful for the comments of Dr Woodall. I know that he is one of several family medicine educators and investigators interested in the interplay of spirituality and medicine. I applaud his efforts at establishing an elective in religion and medicine for fourth-year medical students. I agree that this area is worthy of serious consideration and curriculum development by organizations such as the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). A core of interested individuals met at the 1995 STFM annual convention, and I sincerely hope that the enthusiasm evidenced by those participants will be strengthened in future forums. Only thorough further exploration, dialogue, and research will this important area of holistic patient care be understood and legitimized.
