I was slow in resolving the dilemma of how to review this large textbook after it arrived on my desk. For several days, I did nothing but thumb through the more than 20 pages of authors and their affiliations and the detailed table of contents and index. The thought of reading the book from cover to cover seemed daunting. Then, while reading the preface, it suddenly came to me that I should put the book to work and see if it achieved the purpose defined by the editors. Over the next 2 weeks, I would refer to the text every time one of my pediatric patients had a problem.
On the first day a 4-year-old boy came to the office with yet another ear infection. His frustrated mother had many questions for me. The 3 pages devoted to "The Management of Otitis Media" included a table on the various antibiotics
