The symbiotic relationship existing between a university and its auxiliary organization introduces the question of how unionization among higher education faculty and staff has affected unionization among auxiliary employees. The degree of autonomy possessed by the auxiliary was shown to be a critical factor in the unionization of auxiliary employees. The legal separation of the auxiliary from the university and the small numbers of employees were seen to raise the union's costs of organizing and negotiating for auxiliary employees. Auxiliary wage policy that places strong emphasis on matching university wages was also seen to reduce the demand for unionization among auxiliary employees.
