CARLTON The authors posit a model of political behavior adapted from the work of Gurr and Davies on Relative Deprivation (RD) in an attempt to explain recent behavior among Virginia's teachers. The authors believe that a period of rising economic expectations, followed by the drastic economic downturn of the early 1980's, has promoted an "intolerable gap" between expectations and need satisfaction among teachers, causing an increase in perceived RD. Preliminary data indicate an increasing level of frustration, coupled with overt manifestations of militance, among the teaching population.
