Abstract

This study looks at a recent survey of union member attitudes in an effort to isolate, from the member's perspective, the factors that are most important in shaping the quality of union-management relations. Data were collected through a national survey of the membership of the National Association of Letter Carriers, a postal union of approximately 220,000 members. The results suggest that four variables - attitude toward the supervisor, member perception of the effectiveness of the grievance procedure, intrinsic job satisfaction, and commitment to the union - are the most important determinants of the quality of union-management relations.
