In recent years there has been a significant increase in union membership and collective bargaining among academic professionals. Using a well-known public university as a sample, this study found considerable support for the proposition that unionized professionals' concerns go beyond the traditional "bread and butter issues." While several professional issues seem to be important in the arena of bargaining priorities and goals in the 1980s, the issues of academic freedom and personnel decision making stand out as the most predominant.
