NELSON This article reports the results of a survey of factfinders in Ohio. It indicated that factfinders generally agree as to their role in the factfinding process, the purpose of their recommendations, and the desirability of mediation by the factfinder. There are important differences among the factfinders regarding the basis for their recommendations and when mediation ought to be offered. Further analysis found some of the differences in views to be related to the factfinders' education and primary occupation. The study concluded that research on the fact-finding process as well as the selection of a factfinder should take into account the differences among factfinders revealed by this study.
