Abstract
Efforts to reduce violence in the public schools have generally followed a mechanistic approach based on the belief that there are certain basic links between tighter school regulations and increased discipline and school safety. This problem-solving approach has attempted to isolate those aspects of school violence which are thought to be truly fundamental and reconstruct them in ways to make our schools safe and healthy for children. This article examines one teacher association and school district's effort to use a whole systems design to make the public schools safer for students and teachers. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License.
