Abstract

The focus of this article is to compare collective bargaining agreement tenure aware requirements with the tenure award guidelines of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). Most criticism of tenure practices are based on the interpretations of the AAUP's 1940 Statement of Academic Freedom and Tenure. An examination of literature in the higher education tenure arena finds a divergence of standards regarding the award of tenure. This article compares eleven collective bargaining agreements to ten guidelines proposed by the AAUP with an additional variable, reference to AAUP standards, being included because of allusion by AAUP that many institutions reference their policies without actually adhering to them. Results of the survey show a plurality of such agreements use four of the guidelines, with a simple majority of institutions utilizing at least six.
