MOORE AND RAY MARSHALL The article analyzes the growth of unionism among public school teachers. The authors attribute the long-run expansion in the teachers' union movement to a number of factors, including teacher salary structures, the size, composition, and location of the teaching force, and the strength and prestige of organized labor. Short-run union growth is caused by other factors, including favorable government policies, social influences such as the women's movement, and the support of organized labor.
