Abstract

Energy consumption and energy efficiency in residential and commerical buildings are functions of both technology and people. Although improvements in efficiencies of buildings, appliances, and equipment are important, utlimately it is people who purchase, install, operate, and maintain these technologies. This article reviews recent research on the behavior of individuals and organizations relative to energy use and efficiency in buildings. Household purchase and operating behavior are discussed, as are the behaviors of designers and builders, appliance manufacturers, and financial institutions.
