      <abstract abstract-type="article" xml:lang="en">&lt;p&gt;Der Anteil älterer Menschen hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren in den Industrienationen verdreifacht und die Lebenserwartung verdoppelt. Es spricht einiges dafür, dass die Prävalenzen von älteren Menschen mit Suchterkrankungen innerhalb der nächsten Jahre stark ansteigen werden. Dieser Artikel beschreibt das aktuelle epidemiologische Wissen zu diesem Thema. Ferner werden, soweit bekannt, die speziellen Aspekte des Alterungsprozesses, der Risikofaktoren sowie der Diagnostik und Therapie dargestellt. Die wissenschaftliche Evidenz zur Behandlung von älteren Menschen mit Suchterkrankungen ist klein und orientiert sich grösstenteils an den Erkenntnissen über jüngere Erwachsene. Die Behandlung älterer Menschen mit Alkohol- und Medikamentenabhängigkeit berücksichtigt darüber hinaus die speziellen Bedürfnisse älterer Menschen. Die Erkennung und das Benennen der Suchtproblematik in der Primärversorgung sind Schlüsselelemente für den Zugang zu einer Therapie. Zur Klärung der offenen Fragen von Suchterkrankungen älterer Menschen besteht ein hoher Forschungsbedarf.&lt;/p&gt;</abstract>
