      <abstract abstract-type="article" xml:lang="en">
        <p>Der Schweizer Wissenschaftshistoriker Alexandre Métraux kontaktierte 1984 den britischen Neurologen Oliver Sacks (1933-2015) und trug dazu bei, dass dessen Bücher auf Deutsch erscheinen konnten. Im folgenden Gespräch berichtet er von persönlichen Begegnungen sowie der Briefkorrespondenz mit Sacks, ferner die Geschichte der deutschen Ausgaben von Awakenings . Dabei setzt er sich mit Sacks‘ Werk im Kontext prominenter Nervenärzte wie Kurt Goldstein und Aleksandr Lurija auseinander und diskutiert insbesondere die inneren Spannungen zwischen einer narrativen Darstellung des inneren Erlebens neurologischer Patienten bei gleichzeitiger Begeisterung für reduktionistische neurowissenschaftliche Theorien. Trotz seiner eindrücklichen Falldarstellungen gelang auch Sacks letztlich diese von ihm geforderte Synthese zwischen „klassischer“ und „romantischer“ Wissenschaft (sensu Lurija) nicht, was als Auftrag angesehen werden kann, die klinische Neurologie und Neuropsychologie in diese Richtung weiter zu entwickeln.</p>
