<p>Der vorliegende Artikel beschreibt den seltenen Fall eines zuvor gesunden 4-jährigen Mädchens mit einem Herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Die mutmassliche subklinisch verlaufene Primärinfektion mit dem Varizella Zoster Virus erfolgte im Alter von 10 Tagen. Der Artikel beschreibt die möglichen Szenarien, wie es zu einem derart frühen Auftreten eines Herpes zosters kommen kann, die möglichen Komplikationen bei Kindern und deren Therapie, mit speziellem Fokus auf den Herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse aus der Literatur werden in der Diskussion zusammengefasst.</p>
