        <p>Die COVID-19 Pandemie ist durch das Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 verursacht, welches primär das pulmonale und kardiovaskuläre System befällt. Neurologische Komplikationen werden bei hospitalisierten Patienten mit einer Prävalenz von 20% bis 60% beschrieben. Neben frühen, unspezifischen (wie Kopfschmerzen, Müdigkeit/Insomnie, Muskelschmerzen, Schwindel) und spezifischen Symptomen (Geruch-Geschmackstörungen), werden v.a. bei schweren Verläufen später auftretende, schwere Komplikationen wie Enzephalopathie (mit Verwirrtheit, Koma, epileptischen Anfällen), Schlaganfall und Guillain-Barré Syndrom beobachtet. Anschliessend können Patienten über Monate unter einem sog. Post-Neuro-Covid-Syndrom mit Müdigkeit, Kopfschmerzen und Insomnie leiden.
Als Ursache der neurologischen COVID-19 Manifestation werden eine direkte Neuroinvasivität, als auch systemische (u.a. hypoxische und prothrombotische), para- und post-infektiöse (u.a auch autoimmunvermittelte) Mechanismen diskutiert. Liquor-, MRI und Pathologie-Befunde belegen das Vorliegen von entzündlichen und vaskulären Veränderungen. 
Internationale Kooperationen (u.a. von der European Academy of Neurology, EAN) wurden initiiert, um die Neuro-COVID-19 Komplikationen und Langzeitfolgen besser zu verstehen.</p>
