Eine 64-jährige Patientin wurde aufgrund einer starken Migräne mit Amitriptylin behandelt. Hierunter entwickelte sie im Verlauf eine Leukopenie. Da sich die Symptomatik nach Absetzen von Amitriptylin  besserte, jedoch bei erneuter Einnahme des Präparats die Leukopenie wieder auftrat, liegt der Verdacht nahe, dass es sich um eine unerwünschte Arzneimittelwirkung von Amitriptylin handelt. Leukopenien sind seltene, jedoch nicht zu unterschätzende unerwünschte Arzneimittelwirkungen. Sie werden in toxische und allergische Leukopenien unterteilt und können durch unterschiedliche Mechanismen entstehen. Das Melden von unerwünschten Arzneimittelwirkungen (UAW) stellt einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Arzneimittelsicherheit dar.
