The species was unified into Mycobacterium bolletii in 2011 (possibly contravening the Code, since this exemplar would lose its status as a nomenclatural type). In 2016 a competing taxonomic opinion reduced the species in rank to Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense, then a subsequent new combination created Mycobacteroides abscessus massiliense, which is possibly the current taxon for this strain. The rules of priority would state that the 2011 unification would result in this strain not having standing in nomenclature as a non-type strain of Mycobacterium bolletii.
