    <public-note>The original strains of Koch appear to have been lost in 1945. This neotype strain (the Vollum strain, isolated from bovine anthrax) is from the Microbiological Research Establishment (Porton, Wilshire, England) and was deposited by T. Gibson (School of Agriculture, Edinburgh) in 1963 as ATCC 14578, NCIB 9388 and NCTC 10340. Most repositories removed this strain (biohazard group ACDP 3) from their public collections. This low virulence strain (MLST genotype GT77, group A4) is commonly used in research studies and closely related strains have been found in the UK, Spain, and Zimbabwe. Bacillus anthracis spores are available from the Bioterrorism Rapid Response and Advanced Technology Laboratory, Division of Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The K4596 identifier was assigned by the Special Pathogens Laboratory, Department of Pathological Sciences, Louisiana State University.</public-note>
