    <curatorial-note>Takeuchi et al. 2001 proposed the division of the genus Sphingomonas. According to them, Sphingobium herbicidovorans is a new combination with the basonym of Sphingomonas herbicidovorans.

Yabuuchi et al. 2002 (rid. 6746) are of the opinion that the genus Sphingomonas should not be divided into different genera as proposed by Takeuchi et al. 2001. 

Since the the new genus names and new combinations resulting from the division of Sphingomonas have been validly published, they have standing in nomenclature. 

The difference in taxonomic opinion, leads to a homotypic synonymy between Sphingobium herbicidovorans and Sphingomonas herbicidovorans.
