Abstract

A newly hired school superintendent confronted multiple crises ranging from labor disputes and a defeated budget to poor staff and community relations. He took a variety of steps to empower staff, settle disputes out of court, and win the support of staff and community. After the labor difficulties were settled, that school district then embarked upon Win/Win negotiations and became the first school district in the state to successfully employ this style of collaborative negotiations. The preparation for bargaining, the Win/Win process employed, and the negotiations outcomes are described.
