Nomenclatural History
The family Rhodobacteraceae was originally proposed by Garrity et al. 2005. This name was validly published by Euzéby 2006. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this family in 2020. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Liang et al. in 2021.

According to Rule 51b(1), the family name Rhodobacteraceae Garrity et al. 2006 was illegitimate because the family contained the genus Hyphomonas (ex Pongratz 1957) Moore et al. 1984, which is the type of the family Hyphomonadaceae Lee et al. 2005. This issue was resolved by the creation of Hyphomonadales and emendation of Hyphomonadaceae by Kevbrin et al. 2021 and this name is no longer considered to be illegitimate.
