The species Rhodobacter adriaticus was originally described and validly published by Imhoff et al. 1984. Imhoff et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Rhodopseudomonas adriatica Neutzling et al. 1984
into the genus Rhodobacter Imhoff et al. 1984 emend. Suresh et al. 2019. In 1994, Hiraishi and Ueda established Rhodobacter adriaticus as the basonym of
Rhodovulum adriaticum (Neutzling et al. 1984) Hiraishi and Ueda 1994
