The species Ketogulonicigenium robustum was originally described and validly published by Urbance et al. 2001. List Editor corrected this name from (sic) to .

Tindall 2019 asserts that one of the two type deposits is a patent strain. This name is currently considered to be illegitimate due to the illegitimate status of the genus.
