Nomenclatural History
The species Methanobacterium thermautotrophicum was originally described by Zeikus and Wolfe 1972. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Boone and Mah corrected this name from (sic) to . Touzel et al. published an emended description of this species in 1992. Touzel et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Zhilina and Ilarionov 1986 in 1992. Kotelnikova et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of corrig. Blotevogel et al. 1988 in 1993. In 2000, Wasserfallen et al. established as the basonym of (Zeikus and Wolfe 1972) Wasserfallen et al. 2000 .
