The species Methanobacterium wolfei was originally described by Winter et al. 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 17 in 1985. In 2000, Wasserfallen et al. established as the basonym of (Winter et al. 1985) Wasserfallen et al. 2000 .
