The genus Silicibacter was originally proposed by Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1997. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 71 in 1999. Yi et al. transferred the members of this genus into
Ruegeria Uchino et al. 1999 emend. Wirth and Whitman 2018
in 2007.
