Nomenclatural History
The genus Sphingomonas was originally proposed by Yabuuchi et al. 1990. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 34 in 1990. Yabuuchi et al. published an emended description of this genus in 1999. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Takeuchi et al. in 2001, Yabuuchi et al. in 2002, Busse et al. in 2003, Chen et al. in 2012 and Feng et al. in 2017. Yabuuchi et al. transferred the members of van Bruggen et al. 1990 into this genus in 1999.
