The species Sphingomonas stygia was originally described and validly published by Balkwill et al. 1997. In 2001, Takeuchi et al. established Sphingomonas stygia as the basonym of
Novosphingobium stygium corrig. (Balkwill et al. 1997) Takeuchi et al. 2001
.
