The genus Phenylobacterium was originally proposed and validly published by Lingens et al. 1985. Kanso and Patel published an emended description of this genus in 2004. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Tiago et al. in 2005, Zhang et al. in 2007, Abraham et al. in 2008 and Oh and Roh in 2012.
