The species Rhizobium japonicum was originally described by Buchanan 1926. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1982, Jordan established as the basonym of (Kirchner 1896) Jordan 1982 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
