The species Agrobacterium atlanticum was originally described and validly published by Rüger and Höfle 1992. Uchino et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Agrobacterium meteori Rüger and Höfle 1992
in 1998. In 1998, Uchino et al. established Agrobacterium atlanticum as the basonym of
Ruegeria atlantica (Rüger and Höfle 1992) Uchino et al. 1999 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
