The species Agrobacterium radiobacter was originally described by Conn 1942. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 94 in 2014. Sawada et al. published an emended description of this species in 1993. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Zhang et al. in 2014 and Hördt et al. in 2020. In 2001, Young et al. established Agrobacterium radiobacter as the basonym of
Rhizobium radiobacter (Beijerinck and van Delden 1902) Young et al. 2001
