The species Ensifer saheli was originally described and validly published by Young 2003. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Young formed this name in 2003 by placing the species
Sinorhizobium saheli De Lajudie et al. 1994
into the genus Ensifer Casida 1982 emend. Kuzmanović et al. 2022.
