The species Rhodopseudomonas capsulata was originally described by van Niel 1944. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1984, Imhoff et al. established as the basonym of (Molisch 1907) Imhoff et al. 1984 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
